Elegant Rambling Apartment in Fascinating Roman Neighborhood

Sleeps 7+ 1 with 3 bedrooms and 3 baths

Location

This spacious apartment is in the prized Campo de' Fiori area. Most specifically it adjoins the old Jewish ghetto that is a characteristic Roman neighborhood with fascinating local shops and restaurants. The Campo de' Fiori piazza itself hosts the oldest open-air market in Rome where you can shop daily for field-fresh vegetables, fruits and flowers. Piazza Navona, another justly famous Roman gathering place lies a five minute walk beyond Campo de' Fiori. Ancient Roman landmarks surround you, too, with the ruined temples in Largo Argentina, the Theater of Marcellus (with its summer music program), and the Capitoline Hill all within a five minute walk. See our photo tour for pictures and more descriptions of the neighborhood.

Building

Built in the mid-1500s, this noble palace is still home to a family that traces its history through military leadership for the Bourbon kings of Naples and Sicily and whose history is interwoven with Italy's. The Palazzo opens onto a small piazza with the graceful Turtle Fountain. Enter through the massive front door that is staffed with a doorman during business hours into a well-kept courtyard. Look up to see fragments of frescoes from the Renaissance period on the interior walls.

Interior Description

The entry room is large and four elegant columns frame several handsome antique pieces: a sideboard and desk among others. With its own little balcony, the extension of the foyer contains a desk overlooking Roman views. The apartment has high-speed internet by wifi, work from Rome, if you have to!

Large, bright and welcoming, the living room has a number of fine pieces of art and antiques in a formal style. The sofa and side chairs have recently been upholstered in Victorian style cut velvet. We tested them and they are perfectly comfortable. French doors open onto a balcony that wraps the entire floor. While sitting on the couch you can enjoy a beautiful characteristic view of red tiled rooftops and sunny piazzas. You look right down onto the neighborhood bakery (a vanishing institution) the smells of which perfume your mornings. The bakery and its small, companion grocery story offers kosher items. Also in the piazza below is the San Pietrino restaurant, a famous, high end Roman eatery.

The dining room is separate from the living room. An oval interior window bring extra light in from the living room. It has a large antique hutch, a massive table and seats 8 so the whole family can join together to plan Roman excursions and to review adventures of the day.

The kitchen has been recently renovated and boasts efficient cupboards and stainless appliances. There is a large refrigerator, gas stovetop and oven, microwave, toaster, drip coffee maker as well as the expected pots, pans and utensils. Another oval window brings in light from the living room.

Above the kitchen is a loft dedicated to laundry with a new washing machine, iron and ironing board.

The master bedroom has plenty of room and is complete bedside tables and lamps. An antique chest and mirror are at the base of steps that rise up to a sleeping loft that contains a day bed (suitable for a child) and armoire. It can be made up as a bed, best for a child because if its smaller size. The view from the French windows or balcony just outside is the same fascinating neighborhood view as the living room. The en-suite bathroom in sparkling white tiles has shower over tub.

The second bedroom has two twin beds, antique chest and mirror. It also has a loft that can be set up with a rollaway bed. The view is different than the above; it overlooks San Carlo Catenari whose dome is the third highest in Rome. The second bedroom also has an ensuite bath, shower over tub.

The third bedroom has two twin beds that can be joined as a queen that are on a platform in this small room. The ceiling height is low but it will accommodate adults of 6'. The painted pine antiques in here are really charming. There is an old-fashioned basin set in a stand, a lovely bureau and bedside table. This bedroom is accessed from a little hallway off the foyer. The bath is on the left, serving as a guest bathroom. It has a shower. There are steps leading up to the third bedroom. The first step of the stairs is wedge shaped and narrow on the inside, watch your step.

We have inspected this apartment:

  • Furnishings are of good to fine quality. There are a few tacky pieces so we suggest focusing on the nice ones of which there are plenty.

  • The balcony is a great window on the neighborhood and the large French doors throughout ensure the apartment is filled with light.

  • Mattresses are of good quality.

  • The apartment is large, rambling with interesting lofts all over the place.

  • The balcony railing isn't high, take care with small children.

  • The elevator is cranky, needs to be used with care.

  • The building is elegant and fascinating, a historical palace.

  • The location is terrific, in a pedestrian zone.

Our trip was Excellent! Thank you for all of your help and recommendations. I did get a picture of the boys in front of the turtle fountain, but they were all reluctant to get naked and pose. They were reluctant to pose at all. They have a very Italian perspective on vacationing. They don't like to be perceived as tourists. They want to blend in and absorb the culture.

We really enjoyed staying at the apartment you found for us. The accomodations were perfect for our family and located very centrally for sight seeing and enjoying Rome. Our comfortable apartment allowed us to eat a simple breakfast in the mornings and then go out and embark on our sight seeing and touring and we were so happy to have some extra space to stretch out and relax in the afternoon. We were in easy walking distance of excellent restaraunts and enjoyed eating dinner out in the neighborhood most nights. I didn't expect to do laundry and I didn't even care that our apartment came equiped with a washing machine. However, it came in very handy as it was quite warm in Rome when we were there. I actually loved hanging my laundry out to dry on the balcony and chatting with the neighbors. That is probably one of my favorite memories. As far as what I enjoyed the most... it was just being in Rome and wandering around. I can't wait to go back without an agenda. We felt compelled to see as many sights as we could while we were there, but we will enjoy the city at a more relaxed pace on our return. We did take a tour with Context Rome on our arrival (www.contextrome.com). It was probably our favorite tourist activity. Our guide was exceptional. He wandered us around the city orienting us and showing us as many sights as he could in 2 hours. Our favorite was probably the Pantheon.

I can't think of any drawbacks or problems. We didn't encounter any. We got lost pretty badly one night on our way to dinner and we gave up finding the restaraunt we were looking for. But, we ended up finding a place that we loved so much that we returned for a second night during our stay. Ironically, we never did figure out what it was called, but it is downstairs in the same building as our apartment. The food was good and the service was exceptional. We did find Vecchia Roma (the restaraunt we were originally looking for) the next night - only a block or two from our apartment. I highly recommend it, as well.

I think the only thing that I wasn't prepared for was buying fruits and vegetables in the market. I didn't understand that I needed to weigh my produce in the produce section before proceeeding to the register. I guess it is fairly common, because we saw other people having the same problem. We also had to learn how to help make change by using small coins to allow for easier change back (especially in the market).

The only other tip I would have for families travelling in Italy is to pack lightly and only bring comfortable shoes. We took entirely too much with us and had to lug it all over Italy and Greece. I will definitely take less next time.

Thanks again for all of your help! We had an excellent trip!
