Refined Apartment
near the
Spanish Steps
Sleeps 4 with 2 bedrooms and
2 baths
Regency is the style of this apartment, fine
antiques, silk upholstery and room to enjoy this
elegant apartment in the heart of Rome.
Location
Via dei Greci is one of the many
interesting streets in the Spanish Steps area of
Rome. Closed to traffic, it houses Saint
Anastasious Greek Catholic church and college, the
world-famous national academy of music of Santa
Cecilia, and the spot where English-speaking ex-patriots
meet, the Lion Bookshop. It is a two minute walk
to the very central Spanish Steps piazza.
Building
Five or six buildings that date
from the 1600s surround a large, quiet
courtyard. You'll come and go through the small
door in the carriage gate, but no carriages these
days. In fact, no cars or motorcycles in the
courtyard, either, just tenants that include a
custom violin maker's shop. Peek in the window to
see his wares.
The courtyard has plantings and
many apartment balconies have flowers. It is a
quiet oasis in a busy city.
The apartment is on the fourth floor
(third, European designation). There is an
elevator all the way. There are four or five steps
to negotiate as you make your way from street
level, across the courtyard and to the elevator.
Interior Description
From the spacious foyer you
enter the dining room and then the light-filled
living room that has three large windows. The
living room has a sofa, two love seats and two
unusual sleigh-type chairs as well as a number of
large antiques and attractive paintings. The room
is large, about 350 square feet.
The dining room is also spacious
with side boards and French doors that open onto
an internal balcony that is shared with the
kitchen.
The kitchen is all new with
white cabinetry, all appliances including a large
refrigerator/freezer and a breakfast bar.
At the end of the entry hall is
the twin bedroom with a window onto Via dei Greci.
The room is large and comfortable and has a pretty
antique secretary as well as a bureau.
Next comes a bathroom and then
four steps up to the master bedroom level. The
master bath is accessed off the corridor.
The bedroom is old-fashioned
with a beautiful brass bedstead and lace coverlet.
The color theme is green. You'll find some nice
antique pieces here. The master bedroom overlooks
Via dei Greci as well, and has French doors onto a
private balcony. Across the street is the Academy
of Santa Cecilia, Italy's national music academy
and you may occasionally hear the strains of the
master's level music students practicing.
This apartment is very close to
the Spagna
apartment, so, between them, a group of seven is
accommodated.
We have inspected in this apartment. Our
opinion:
-
The
apartment is lovely, large and welcoming.
-
The location
is terrific, right near the Spanish Steps but
on a quiet side-street.
-
Via
dei Greci is a quiet, pedestrian-only street, except
for taxis, local deliveries and motorini
(motor scooters) that seem to buzz around with
impunity.
-
The
master bedroom and small bedroom windows open
onto the interior courtyard, quiet.

We loved the Greci apartment. Location was
fantastic, the apartment was lovely. It WAS
perfect! So thank you for all your help.
Barbara Winton, Oct 07
Our trip to Rome was wonderful and the
wedding was one that Tom and Katie would be
jealous of - Tom could take notes for his next
one. We loved the apartment and it fit our
needs perfectly. It was very light and airy
and the sounds from the Music Academy accross
the street added a nice feel. It was also very
quiet, which is rare for a large city. We
loved the location and could walk to almost
anywhere we wanted to go. My wife wants to
come back and rent it for a month, so we can
really get into the Roman life. Paul was very
helpful in getting us started and settled.
The only minor inconvenience was the
tub/shower in the main bath. It was the
typical tub with no shower enclosure that you
find a lot in Europe. It had a hand held spray
head but nowhere to attach it.

I'll tell you that the Rome apartment is
quite a unique rental. We really enjoyed the
location being so close to Piazza Popolo and
on that small street without autos. The church
view was spectacular no matter what time of
day. We were entertained by the Rome music
academy students but it wasn't always a serene
experience. I think I would reinforce to
guests that the apartment is a private
residence filled with antiques. Some guests
would not belong there, and may not find it
casual enough to 'kick back'. However, we
loved it!
The orientation was important, as she was
stressing the importance of safety, and we
know from a number of other friends in Rome
that break-ins are a possibility. The kitchen
was extremely well-stocked.
The apartment is a wonderful place that I'd
highly recommend and/or revisit.

Accommodations:
Comfortable, and the space is quite handsome.
The school of decoration disagreed with our
sensibilities. Terrace was excellent. We kept
thinking about how beautiful the bones of the
apartment were, and how much we would have
liked to furnish and decorate it
ourselves.
We liked
the kitchen the most. We like cooking, and
part of the adventure is living like a Roman.
I had my hair cut at a local, non-fancy barber
(and thus emboldened went back for a shave);
we went to the local markets, butcher, etc.
The fact that there are no intersecting
streets running parallel to the Babuino is a
big plus, as it cut down the tourist traffic
to a minimum. There are some great local
coffee places that we went to with just
locals. Not chic, but just what we like.
The
fellow who met us whose name escapes me just
now is terrific, as is the driver Stefano,
whom we used to visit a friend's farm nearby,
and to the airport very very early when we
departed. Closing the shutters every time we
left was a nuisance. [A necessity in Rome,
unfortunately.]
Loved
hearing people rehearse, as we are a musical
family. Also we were so near that new museum
just beyond the tomb of Augustus [Ara Pacis].
And I did like the place on the Babuino which
is combination antique store and café. Every
day we would stroll on Via Margutta.
Otherwise, couldn't stand the Piazza Spagna
and the other overrun-with-tourist places.
Fortunately we have some friends who grew up
in Rome and still live there, so we had a nice
dose of seeing Rome from a local point of
view.
Shops,
Restaurants: I played some violins at the
luthier downstairs, and the piano shop is
exceptional as they carry the Fazioli piano, a
cut or three above the Steinway-Bosendorfer-Bechstein
level. The café in the Accademia I wish I had
discovered earlier
I
dressed formally-suit and tie-every day. Makes
a difference in how one is treated.
Excellent
Europe: Your introductory package is
excellent, for we enjoy the anticipation as
well as the visit; it was great to read
through it several times beforehand.

We had a
wonderful time and the keystone of our visit
was the apartment. It was superb and exceeded
all our expectations! Both the owner and
greeter were great to work with, very helpful
and accommodating. I will tell you that Jacob
is a prize worth capturing. He is a polite,
knowledgeable, friendly, helpful young man and
was a godsend to us - rookies in Rome! The apt
was wonderful. As you know, it was
unseasonably hot while we were there and the
air conditioning was a much appreciated after
being out all day in the city heat. The
electricity allocation seemed to be
adequate...we went over by about 30 euros
which was fine....we were careful but ran it a
lot! The apt is beautifully and completely
furnished with every convenience. We would
rent it again in a minute! Your guides and
handouts were exceptionally done. They really
helped us with the ins and outs of visiting
Rome for the first time. The information was
useful, accurate and appropriate. Thank you
for taking the time to write them. Your
attention to detail was very helpful. I cannot
think of one "constructive
criticism" I can provide to help you
improve your services. Thanks again for
helping us have a wonderful vacation!"
