The living room in this central Roman penthouse is
elegant and spacious with a sofa, love
seat and three arm chairs. The floors are parquet. Fine
antiques and artwork decorate the comfortable space.
To the right are French doors onto the balcony and
to the left, through the door, the entry. Stairs rise to
the sleeping loft.
|
|
|
|
The living room and dining room open through three
sets of French doors onto the long balcony. The warm
Roman sun ensures the room is bright.
The dining table seats four. Serving items are found
in a beautiful art deco cabinet. Fine art and antiques
decorate the apartment.
The television and DVD player are housed in a corner
cabinet flanked by two pink brocade upholstered chairs.
Guests are given free internet access and free use
of a PC.
|
|
The view from the balcony with its terra cotta
planters is beautiful. The warm colors of Roman
buildings delight.

|
Directly below is the facade of S. Andrea delle
Frate. You can pick up your morning newspaper at the
news agent in the center of the piazza.
The interior of the church and its charming cloister
are worth a visit. Some high points are a sculpture by
nineteenth century American sculptor Harriet Hosmer,
site of the apparition of the Blessed Virgin to the
founder of Our Lady of Sion, 17th century decoration of
the apse and dome, two marble angels made by Bernini for
the Ponte Sant'Angelo. They are the only angels for that
project made by Bernini; the ones on the bridge were
made by his pupils.
|
|
Bernini's angel sculptures in S. Andrea delle Frate
across the street from this luxurious Roman apartment.
|
|
You cannot see Rome without encountering and
appreciating its most prominent Baroque sculptor and
architect Gianlorenzo Bernini at every turn. At the end
of the street is the former home of Bernini.
Sorry to I digress, back to the apartment.

The kitchen is modern and very nice if small. It
certainly is well equipped with large
refrigerator/freezer (large for Italy), gas stove top
and oven, dishwasher, microwave and drip and
Italian-style coffee makers.
You'll find a cloth bag of salt
on a shelf because "un sacco di sale e un sacco di
soldi," "a bag of salt is a bag of
money."
|
|
The bedroom is welcoming and romantic. The bed is
large and comfortable. You can see the closets with fine
wood work to the right of the photo. The photo doesn't
really do it justice.
There are bedside lamps and also a television.
|
|
The bathroom is charming with marble and cotto tile.
Shower, no tub. Plenty of light, close-up mirror, hair dryer.
|
|
Next to the bathroom and opening into the bedroom is
a small room with more great view of Roman rooftops. The
washing machine is hidden in one of the cabinets. You
could use the space for hanging your clothes on the
drying rack.
The view is terrific and there is a comfortable
chair in this room, so it could also be your quiet
refuge.
|
|
From the living room, a pretty stair case leads to
the sleeping loft.
|
|
|
|
The loft contains a French twin (wide twin bed),
lamp, cabinet with television on top. It is just a loft,
but larger than many I see because you can step around
the bed.
|
|
This is the view from the window in the loft. Who
needs pictures with views like this!
|
|
Sixteen steps up from the apartment entry on the
spiral staircase to the rooftop, altana terrace. There
is a rail, but the steps are narrow and steep.
|
|
The small rooftop terrace is open on three sides and
has a rush mat cover to reduce the sun's glare. What a
perfect, private place for breakfast, any meal, or quiet
contemplation.
Surrounded by plants, there is also a small
refrigerator in the louvered cabinet.
|
|
The views go on and on. From the balcony, you can
see the neighborhood, from the terrace you can see all
of Rome. The prominent building in this photo is the
presidential palace, with one of the flags indicating
that he is in residence.
You can see St. Peter's dome, the Pantheon and the
domes and spires of innumerable churches. I have a dozen
photos, but I'll let you take your own that will
doubtless be better!
|
|
From the street you enter this elegant marble
hallway that leads back to a relatively modern elevator
that will accommodate at least two people.
