Excellent Europe Customer Feedback
We are so happy to help our clients have a great
time in Italy. We've chosen to include more rather
than less of their letters to us because they have
such fun and pass along great ideas that future
clients may appreciate. Also we hope that people
considering working with Excellent Europe can read
these letters and better imagine their enjoyable
travels with our assistance. Pat, Excellent Europe

Thank you so much for your expertise and
wonderful choice of apts for us [Janus
in Rome]. The apt was PERFECT. Great location,
plenty of room, well-kept, great staff. We would
absolutely stay there again.
A couple of times Steve and I went off for
early morning sightseeing while the others slept
late, then would meet up for a family venture.
Nice that we could walk to so many things. In fact
we walked for hours and hours every day.
New Year's Eve was a lot of fun - the crowed
seems to do there own thing with fireworks at the
piazza at Compidoglio (in fact we had fireworks
going on all around us!). Anyway, all lots of fun.
A perfect family vacation.
I look forward to using your services in the
future. Ann D, Massachusetts, December 2007
We thought the accommodation [Angelina,
Rome] was very special. The element that made it so
wonderful for us was the roof top nest where we could
sip our wine, taste our cheese, listen to opera on our
ipod and gaze at the at the softly glimmering Roman
skyline.
If we were to go back we would have a bit of a
dilemma because we both loved the apartment but think
it was probably a bit of a mistake to position
ourselves slap bang between the Spanish Steps and the
Trevi fountain during the high tourist season. However
I think we might be tempted to book the same apartment
but at a time which was less touristy.
Despite my rabbitting on about “tourists”
(which includes us) we had a great time and Angelina,
bless her, was a big part of why we had a such an
enjoyable visit to Roma. Brett C, New South Wales,
Australia, September 07
We had an enjoyable time at the apartment [Landini}
and in Rome. Thank you for all the information
regarding the apartment and the neighborhood. I will
certainly pass you name to friends when they decide to
travel to Italy. Your web site is one of the most
thorough I have seen. Thank you, Rick P. October

Let me say this up front....the entire trip was one
of the best we've taken. We usually mix our time when
we travel staying in the countryside and city center.
We rented a villa in Tuscany for the first week of our
stay and, frankly, I wasn't looking forward to moving
into Rome. However, it was spectacular. The termini is
a bit unnerving for the novice upon arrival but we
used Stefano and it was very pleasant to have them
meet you at the termini and whisk you away to the
flat. The owner of Il
Flaminio was very cordial and gave us great advice
on where to eat, things to see, etc. He made us very
comfortable. The apartment was extremely comfortable
and spacious. It's very nice to have a lot of the
conveniences of home such as well equipped kitchen and
laundry facilities. For city living it was very quiet
and we enjoyed waking in the morning to a fresh breeze
blowing through the floor to ceiling doors and
windows. Pretty much every evening we'd sit on one of
balconies surrounding the apartment and have a glass
of wine. Italy produces some really great red wines
for the enthusiast. I would highly recommend this
accomodation.
It is very conveniently located within walking
distance to virtually everything in the historic part
of Rome. We could walk to the coliseum, Vatican,
Piazza Novella, Spanish Steps, Forum, you name it,
within 30 minutes. I think we enjoyed strolling the
back streets and bumping into the hidden piazzas
throughout Rome most. The best way to see Rome is to
get a bit lost, but we found that very difficult to
do. It's a very easy city to get around in. We felt
extremely safe anytime of day or night and since most
of the vehicular traffic has been banned from central
Rome it is very pedestrian oriented, quiet, and clean.
We have travelled to about a dozen European countries
and had virtually no problems at all in Italy and I
can't think of any drawbacks regarding our Rome or
Italian vacation. The local populace is very accepting
of Americans, surprisingly. The only thing that
surprised me was when we were in our seats waiting for
the train departure from Rome back to Florence a lady
came walking down the aisle begging for money to help
support she and her child. I don't know if that is
common practice or the rail employees just didn't know
she was doing that. But, like any large city, those
kinds of things happen on the streets of Rome and in
the termini. One just has to accept it as part of
life, I suppose.
Again, the location of the apartment couldn't have
been better located in terms of convenience to sites
and being in a quiet location. Tips for future guests?
Book an escorted tour of the Vatican before arrival in
Rome. The wait in the queus are hours and I don't
think I'd waste the time if I didn't have a
prearranged tour. Secondly, don't eat in tratorias,
restaurants, etc that are located directly in the main
piazzas. They are there mainly for the tourist
industry and therefore a little on the pricey side.
It's best to venture off the piazzas down one of the
many smaller streets for food and libations. One I
would recommend is Rist. Tritone on Via Dei Maroniti.
The service and food quality was extraordinary and the
cost was very reasonable. Most quality establishments
cost for 4 people ran around $160 for a 4 course meal
with wine which we found to be about average.
Therefore, be prepared for the euro to dollar shock.
We controlled them impact by having a nice breakfast
in the apartment and snacking during the day before a
nice meal in the evening. Plan on doing any shopping
before 1 PM or after 3 PM. That's when everything
closes down for lunch/siesta. Food establishments
don't open for dinner until 7 PM and remain open until
after midnight.
Your assistance in
arranging our Rome visit and rail transportation is
greatly appreciated. It made our trip most enjoyable
and we'd certainly recommend your services to anyone.
I can't think of a thing that would improve your level
of service. We were very satisfied with what you did
for us. It was a real pleasure to work with you on
this trip and I want to thank you for making it a huge
success.

We had a wonderful time in Rome and thoroughly
enjoyed our stay in the Fontana
apartment. It was very spacious, comfortable,
well-equipped and in a great location. The photos
don't do it justice. The palazzo sits in a charming
square that was just off the beaten track and
surprisingly quiet.
The owner was extremely gracious and helpful. As
well as explaining how everthing worked in the
apartment, he gave us a walking tour of the
neighborhood pointing out grocery stores, banks,
taxis, etc. Everything you might need is within 5
minutes. The welcoming gift of wine and fresh fruit
was most appreciated.
It was very hot when we were there (35+C) so were
glad to come back to an air-conditioned apartment. The
rooms cooled down very quickly. Despite the heat, we
still used the terraces daily - breakfast on the lower
terrace, and early evening drinks on the upper
terrace. I was abit concerned it would be too hot
because there were no umbrellas but both areas were
shaded at these times. We loved starting and ending
our days on the terraces.
It was also nice to have the daily housekeeping -
something that isn't usually included in apartment
rentals.
We thought the area/neighborhood was great and
convenient to the sites. We walked almost everywhere
and used the taxi/bus stand that was 5 minutes away.
Being cat lovers - we enjoyed visiting the cat
sanctuary that was right beside the taxis. We
especially enjoyed the Pantheon area, and Piazza
Navona area (each about 10 minutes away). Both were
lively in the evenings with lots of restaurants and
live entertainment. If you're looking for knock-off
handbags, sunglasses, watches, etc. Piazza Navona had
a great selection! There were also lots of Jewish
restaurants near the Teatro Marcello where in the
summer you can enjoy outdoor classical music concerts.
We didn't actually attend a concert but could still
hear some of the music at the outdoor restaurants.
Also, be sure to cross the bridge and visit Trastevere
- we did the Rick Steves walk through the area and
really enjoyed it.
In terms of problems - nothing major. We had minor
problems with slow water drainage in the shower. We
also felt that a new frypan may be in order as the
"non-stick" part was almost completely off.
A nice addition to the terraces might be some cushions
for the wrought iron chairs as well as an umbrella.
[All of these issues are being addressed. Pat]
Overall, I would recommend
this apartment and Excellent Europe and would gladly
stay here again. Thanks for your help and personal
phone calls - an unexpected but welcome touch.

Just wanted to say
'thanks' for a wonderful experience in Rome! I called
Rosie from the airport and she was waiting at our door
[Tiberio in
Rome] when we arrived! The apartment was exactly as
you described it and looked exactly like the pictures.
This is so important when travelling! It weas
spotlessly clean and ready for all 6 of us. One of the
toilets was not working when we arrived, but was
quickly repaired within a few hours at no
inconvenience to us. Other than that, everything
worked! The apartment owner was kind enough to
call just before we left, asking if everything
was OK. Thanks, until the next time!
Jennifer S, July 2007
The apartment [Landini
in Rome] was superb. A newly renovated and well
equipped 16th Century family owned building in a great
location, and with a very attentive and personable
owner. Basically we enjoyed having such a pleasant
home base to begin and end our many day trips. We
walked to most all of the major sites in Rome. Minor
issues with hot water and major construction on the
adjacent apartment unit, but the owner was quick to
remedy. The building was a block or two off major
thorughfares, which was perfect for us.
Recommendations: The piazzo at Campe de
Fiore - farmers market by day, great food at
night, and shopping always. The real
neighborhood feel, both here and in Trastevere
(just a few blocks across the Tiber River from
our apartment), was among our cultural
highlights. We also enjoyed the Pantheon and
surrounding area.
Travel tips: Using
true-to-scale maps, spend time each evening to
plan the next days outing. We were able to
cover alot of ground on foot, and get to all
the sites we had hoped for, by breaking the
day up into a few smaller destinations - each
linked geographically to the next. By taking
breaks at the many sidewalk cafes and
gelatorias along the way, and filling our
water bottles from the many potable fountains
in Rome, we could refresh ourselves when
needed.

The apartment [Tiberio
in Rome]
was wonderful - we are so glad that we opted to stay
in one rather than a hotel. It was immaculate and
stocked with everything that we could possible need.
The location was midway between two metro stops. We
used the metro every day, and it was never more than a
ten minute walk. We shopped with the locals at the
market located in the COIN Department store. The
cashiers have limited english, but it was not a
problem. The map that we used was FANTASTIC - it is
titled "MapEasy's
Guidemap to Rome. The girls think you should have
more children's videos - some older Disney
stuff.
Running two air conditioners for sleeping uses
about 12 kilowatts of the 15 in our allowance so you
do need to be conscious of the electric. We opted to
wash dishes by hand to conserve electricity - no big
deal. The washing machine takes 2 hours 10 minutes to
do a load of wash - just good to know because I
thought something might have been wrong.
Stafano is wonderful - always on time and very
concerned about doing a good job. He does have limited
english. He arranged our Vatican Tour with a private
guide - an absolutely great decision with the summer
crowds. Favorite sights St John Lateran Basilica St
Clement Church - this is near the Colosseum. It has
three churches, one on top of the other. You take
steps down to a Roman temple from the 5th century, and
then more steps down to a pagan temple from the 2nd
century. It was very cool.
We found that if you stayed at least 3 or 4 blocks
away from tourist sights, you could save a lot of
money on food, and still get great meals. Every meal
was great - I haven't had good pizza since leaving
Rome.
ROMA
PASS is a great deal AS LONG AS one of your three
days to use the card will not be a Monday. It includes
unlimited use of Metro and buses, but you need to know
that most of the sites and museums included for
admission are closed on Mondays.
Take good conditioner - the water is very hard on
your hair. Also, Ryanair worked out great for our
travel from Frankfurt to Rome. Just in case any future
clients are visitng multiple countries.
Pat, I have told everyone how great it was to stay
in the apartment, and we all agree that it really
enhanced our experience. Thanks for your help and info
Sincerely, Pat L, Pennsylvania, July 07
Well, we are back from a wonderful trip. The Rome
apartment [Via
Veneto] was very nice as advertised, and we had a
chance to meet and chat with the manager. Interesting
and pleasant man. We did spend over half and hour
cooling our heels in front of the place with our
suitcases because the driver didn't speak English well
enough to make the call for us to be greeted, even
though I made three attempts to convey that
information. Rome is marvelous, as you know. The
weather was fine, and the only glitch was that I got a
bad blister from too much walking which slowed me down
some. We definitely want to go back. Greece was also
terrific. All in all, a great vacation.
Richard S, California, May 2007
We had a fantastic time in Rome. The apartment [Tiberio]
was perfect for us. We loved the neighborhood, very
few tourists, lots of friendly locals. Very quiet, yet
very close to important transportation hubs. We liked
the little pastry shop only a block or less away (Sanzini?),
and the various restaurants nearby—one, especially,
that featured mushrooms (we called it the Funghi
Restaurant— I think it’s real name was Da Lucia).
Also the pizzas at Osteria di Cicerone. Good gelato
shop on Cicerone, too, near where it meets Cola di
Rienzo.
The air conditioning in the apt came in handy, as
it was very hot during parts of our visit, but we also
found that opening and closing the shutters and the
windows, as suggested in the materials you sent us,
was almost always enough to take care of cooling the
place.
It was so convenient to walk a block to the Tiber,
a couple of blocks to the Lepanto Metro station, and a
couple of blocks in the other direction to the bus
stops on Via Cicerone. One thing that was very
difficult, we found, was learning how to get around
using the bus transit system.
The only thing we had trouble with in the apartment
was the Internet connection. We finally got it to
work, but it took a while.
Everything else about the apartment was perfect. I
would recommend it highly. The luxury of two bedrooms
and two bathrooms may not be necessary for everyone,
but it was right for our party (three adults, one
child). The charmingly cool inner courtyard, funny
little elevator, marble floors, vaulted ceilings, etc.
were ideal. Note that the bathrooms are indeed
narrow....this didn’t bother me, but my husband is a
big man and he found it a little annoying.
Your services (Excellent Europe) were wonderful. We
found the materials you sent us very useful. I am
indeed planning trips to both London and Paris, and
would be most pleased to use the services of your
sister company. Do send me more information!
Thanks again-- Lynn, California, May 2007
"You have
been so wonderful to work with. The villa [Borgo
Bucine] and all the many details were all
perfect! In retrospect, it is such a joy to
think back about what a great time we had
throughout the entire trip. I really cannot
thank you enough." Cynthia B., June
2007
"We are back
and had a great trip to Italia. It was
extremely hot and crowded, but nothing we
didn't expect. We all loved Borgo
Bucine. Its an idyllic setting, nice
accomodations, and the people working there
were great. They were friendly and helpful -
we always had positive interactions. Having
the restaurant is a real plus. We had
breakfast there every day, some dinners, and
even did a cooking lesson. The one thing that
was very onerous was having to pay in cash for
everthing [additional]. Other than that,
everything was great. thanks for your help in
lining it up." Jan, June 2007
Your restaurant
list is fabulous, we were delighted with them
all and ate only off that list. Your driver is
a great find. The apartment [Via
Veneto in Rome] is wonderful. It is very well
located, easy to get to. It was hot and we ran
the air conditioning in both rooms all night
every night and ended up owing only E3.5; we
would have paid ten times that much for the
comfort. At an ATM machine near the Pantheon
our card data was stolen and our account shut
down. Citibank, thankfully, was very helpful,
but tell your guests to be careful.
Dina M, July 2007
We are back from our Italian trip, and I just
wanted to tell you how much we enjoyed our stay at the
Flaminio
[Rome] apartment. The apartment was everything you promised:
spacious, well located and well equipped. It was such
fun to shop in the neighborhood and prepare food. As
someone who loves to cook, our past trips to Italy
have left me frustrated every time I passed a
beautiful fruit and vegetable stand or cheese shop.
This was the opportunity not only to prepare dishes
with the freshest produce I've ever tasted, but also
to practice my beginners level Italian with the
patient, good natured vendors. This was our first stay
in an apartment in Italy, and it certainly won't be
our last. Thanks for all your help. Ciao, Ellen E.
June 2007
We spent some time in Venice and Rome before we
went to the Castello.
We had a wonderful stay there - the property was
great, the pool was gorgeous - nice and big for laps.
The kids look forward to swimming every day after our
day trips. Everyone was helpful. We enjoyed going to
Mamma Rosa the first night and going to the little
town San Casicano and visiting the cheese and wine
stores. We had a very positive experience - everything
you mentioned was right on - including the freeway
noise which was a bit disappointing for us, but we
slept through it anyway. Thanks very much for all your
help, Pat. We enjoyed the travel journals as well ! Emily
B, July 2007
Accommodation [Via
Veneto in Rome] exactly as described with helpful greeting
etc. We really enjoyed the sandwiches/panini with
things you would never eat in a sandwich at home and
that could be bought any way and eaten on the run. In
my view Italy survives as a nation due only to the the
people who were without exception helpful and friendly
living the the chaos that is the country. The location
is good. Not long to the city, and next to a nice
park, with cafes around - it was good. There is a
coffee shop, ~30m to the left when you come out of the
building. They were more than helpful - and the coffee
was excellent. Do not rely on the tourist bus tours.
Especially the Archaeological tour. The timetable is
advisory at best, and they do not always stop. The
standard busses and metro service were more reliable!
Actually, you have been very good - but a situation
map showing the actual building location in the street
would have been useful on the first day. Anthony F,
Norway, April 2007
The accommodations [Fontana
in Rome] were just fine. Actually larger rooms than we
expected. We enjoyed the history of the palace and the
location. No problems at all. The location was perfect
for us, centrally located, to just about everywhere we
wanted to go. And, if we didn't want to walk, the bus
stop and taxi stand was just a block away. We
especially liked the square we were on, - with the
bakery, cafe, gelatoria and restaurants. We were there
so often that we were "locals" in just a few
days time. We think an apartment is the way to go,
especially if you are in one location for more than 4
or 5days. For our family of 4, it's a neccessity.
Actually, we thought your service really was
"excellent" The docs you sent us were
exactly timely and "right-on" target, like
the "Italian telephone" document. With no
conceriege on site, your written info and advice were
very useful. Thanks a lot!! Chris F,
California, April 2007
Hello Pat: We returned home last Tuesday following
enchanted and enchanting visits to Paris, Florence and
Rome. The latter was the real summit in many ways
thanks to the comfort and convenience of the Flaminio
apartment. Everything worked out well from start to
finish. We bought Rome Passes for 3 days during our
stay and were able to take in a host of sights all
around the city, including a walk on the Appia Antica.
With the exception of one day, the weather was
excellent. We'll be back for sure. Thank you again for
your help. Richard B, Ottawa, March 2007
Pat, We had a great time [in Rome] and did nearly
every thing on our itinerary, although not necessarily
in the original order. The driving
school was great for my 10 year old and a bore for
the 11 year old. Definitely a fabulous idea for the
6-10 year olds. The soccer was a big hit. The kids all
time favorite was the bone church that has the crypt
will the bone art in it. The only odd part was the
visit to the Vatican. The confirmation for a
reservation came after we left the states, and we were
just lucky to be there checking on it when we needed
to be at the tour. I don't know why they do that, but
there was no way to check on it other than to fax
them. The confirmation was waiting for us when we got
home.
We also really enjoyed the manager, she was a great
help to us while we were there.
We don't know when we will get back, there are so
many places to go, but we will very much recommend
these apartments [Frattina
Bella]. The location was outstanding and we loved
the apartment too. I never missed having a staff
around and we needed the kitchen too. One of our
little ones did not feel too hot and we were glad to
have something we could call home to go to at the end
of the day. Laura S, Texas, March 2007
Thank you again for all your help. I am sold on
excellent europe and would love to use your company in
the future or be of any help I can in promoting what
you do. Please do not hesitate to ask if I can be of
assistance in doing so for you or for Lisa. Again, we
want to pass along our most sincere appreciation.
Best regards from Cambridge, England, Lucy L, March 2007
Accommodations [Carina
in Rome] were
charming, felt like a home not a rental. Loved
all the books. Enjoyed the view over classic
Rome and the sounds of the bells. Terrific
location for walking everywhere. Especially
enjoyed walking in the Monti area. We went
several times to the wine bar and osteria in the
old Mussolini building and enjoyed what had
become of the Fascist building as much as the
food and atmosphere. [I think that is Gusto
in Piazza Augusto Imperatore. pb] Read
Not Built in a Day by George
Sullivan and Timeless Cities by Dave
Mayernik. We had a great experience [with
Excellent Europe]. Thank you, mille grazie. Frances
M, North Carolina, February 2007
Stefano was such an incredible assistance to us. I
cannot thank you enough for all of the arrangements
you helped me with, Stefano, and the apartment ready
for us to collapse when we arrived on Sunday morning.
The kids arrived on Tuesday which gave David a day to
get ready for their arrival. The audience with the
Pope was very memorable for them, more than they
expected. David was unable to go, so they went on
without us. Their seats were on the twentieth row,
practically in the Pope's lap! They felt like real
VIP's. Caroline truly enjoyed the whole experience and
all the religious attractions Rome has to offer.
The apartment
[Flaminio in Rome] was exactly what we needed. It was
clean and ready for us when we arrived. Everyone was
perfectly happy with the accommodations, and it's
central location to just about everything we wanted to
do and see. I became a regular at the little market
just up the street.
The neighborhood was nice and quiet, except on the
weekend when the nightclub a block up the street was
in full swing. We were usually too tired to be
disturbed by it though. Caroline thought our little
elevator was great, but we quickly found that you
cannot all go up together, and two barely can if you
have purchased too many souvenirs! The numerous travel
books on Rome left in the apartment, and the city maps
were tremendously helpful. They helped us find
wonderful attractions, and some of the best gelato!
For those staying in the apartment in the future, we
found a wonderful gourmet market and bakery on the
corner of Via Dell'orso and Via Della Scrofa. I cannot
remember the name of it, but it is the only one on
that corner. If any of your travelers are looking for
custom made shoes, I have purchased about 4 pair from
Petrocchi Shoes at 25 Via Dell'orso. A very nice
couple own the shop, Danellia (sp?), the wife, runs
the shop, speaks English fairly well, and is very
charming. Her husband is the cobbler, and speaks
perfect English. I have a very difficult size foot and
have much trouble finding shoes to fit. They make
molds of your feet, help design the shoes and suggest
materials and colors, make and ship the shoes to you.
Any adjustments needed are cheerfully taken care of.
I honestly cannot think of a single thing Excellent
Europe can do to improve your services. You offer so
much more than I could ever think of! If it had not
been for your helpful and thoughtful assistance, we
definitely would not have been able to make this trip.
Thanks to you, all my fears and trepidations about
making the trip on the heels of David's illness were
erased!
One more thing. When you think this is a great big
world, think again. On our last day in Rome, I
literally ran into a friend whom I had not seen for
two years on Via de Corso! She had arrived in Rome the
day before! What a wonderful surprise, one I still am
amazed about! I'm not sure if that would happen to
others who choose Excellent Europe, but it was a
perfect way to end our trip!
Thanks again for all your patience and assistance.
Please feel free to use any of our comments in your
advertisements. I will keep your name and address for
the future, as I will your sister's company for Paris
and London. In fact, we plan to take our oldest
granddaughter to one or the other place next year. We
will look her up.
Sincerely, Gerri and David P, October 2006
My wife and I just returned from our stay at the Carina
apartment in Rome. We have been to Rome many times but
the apartment enhanced the experience. We have stayed
in some very nice hotels but none compare to the
Carina apartment. Thanks for your assistance in
procuring the apartment. Pat C, December 2006
The apartment [Angelina
in Rome] was wonderful. We loved it. It was
comfortably furnished, the bed was comfortable, the
kitchen was more than adequately eqipped, the computer
(high speed internet) was a great convenience, and the
owners even provided a few welcoming groceries and a
bottle of wine ( a lovely touch).
We enjoyed having coffee and cereal at home in the
morning and being able to eat dinner at home a couple
of nights. We also enjoyed relaxing in the pleasant
living room with the guidebook and planning the next
day, with the computer nearby to make
reservations.
The location is wonderfully convenient for
shopping, siteseeing and dining. For joggers, the
location is perfect--we jogged in the Borghese gardens
every morning. The Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps
are just a "stone's throw" away. The church
across the street is definitely worth a visit. There
is a new shop in the same block as the apartment (I
don't recall the name) that sells interesting jewelry
made of Murano glass.
Your website was the best that I found when I was
looking for an apartment in Rome (although I didn't
find it through a web search; rather through Mariann).
The site provides excellent detail and a fair
assessment of the apartment. There were no surprises.
The car service you recommended worked well. Your
follow-up e-mail in the middle of our stay was also
welcome.
I have been singing your praises to everyone and
have recommended your website to several interested
people. We will definitely be in touch for our next
trip to Italy. Jane
H, November 2006
We had a wonderful time in Venice. The weather was
very cooperative, with only one day of cloudy, cold
weather (luckily it was our last day - when we went to
Murano). My husband is a runner, and he was able to
run every morning -- as long as he got up early to
beat the crowded walkways. I am a painter, and was
able to get many sketches and reference photos to use
in my work once we returned to Madison. I am
developing these ideas into drawing and paintings in
preparation for our art-show season. I paint
full-time, and we earn our living by selling my work
at outdoor art fairs. I used to sell through
galleries, but tired of the commissions taken by
galleries, and missed actually meeting the people who
liked my work enough to purchase it. So we decided to
self-market through that venue. Vencie certainly
provided fertile ground from which I could grow many
ideas/images. Having such a nice "home base"
certainly helped my whole creative process.
The accomodations [Ca'
Bella] could not have been nicer. Isabella was the
perfect hostess. She explained everything in the
apartment, and took us on a little walking tour of the
"neighborhood" when we arrived. She pointed
out locations for an internet site, grocery,
restaurant, etc, and was very informative and helpful.
The apartment itself was all that we could ask for. We
cooked nearly all of our evening meals there, and
enjoyed it very much.
I can't exactlyl say what we enjoyed the most. The
location was very convenient -- close to a Vaporetto
stop, easily walkable to the Rialto, close to San Polo
square, close to a nice little grocery and internet
site. And as I said, the apartment itself was
wonderful.
We saw no drawbacks and had no problems. If,
however, someone had difficulty with stairs, they
might find the climb to the apartment a drawback. We
did not. One Italian cultural habit that became
tiresome for us non-smokers was the ubiquitous
cigarette smoke from which we felt we could escape
only inside museums, on the Vaporetto, or in the
apartment. I don't know if it bothers you when you are
there, but it certainly bothered us.
Regarding nearby attractions, we found two great
shops for fresh pasta. Our favorite was on Vecchia San
Giovanni on the walk to the Rialto. Of course, we took
advantage of the Rialto market for our fresh fruit and
vegetables. There is also a very fine, unique, small
glass shop directly across from the apartment. We
found the most unique glass work in this shop of any
we experienced (including Murano). It is a small,
one-person shop.
You were very thorough in your information sent to
us prior to our leaving, so the only tips we have for
future guests is to read all of your fine material
prior to their leaving, and follow your advice. Also,
don't take the Vaporetto everywhere -- walk instead.
Even to seemingly distant destinations. We wanted to
attend a concert at the church Santa Maria De Salute.
Instead of taking the Vaporetto, we walked --- and
discovered the most fascinating row of art galleries
along the way that we never would have located down in
that area of Venice. We also found the only shop in
Venice that still repairs Gondolas. Again, we had read
about it, but never would have found it had we taken
the Vaporetto rather than the "back roads".
We can't think of anything Excellent Europe could
do to improve its service. Aletha & Phillip,

Apartment [Tiberio]
was great. Definitely limited headroom upstairs. Nice
area, quiet. There was not a dryer (which I am sure
was in the info you sent) but I think whenever an
American sees washer we just assume a dryer must be
included. Maybe highlight that point. Appliances were
all excellent.
I totally forgot to call the owner from the airport
and so arrived at the apartment and then realized I
forgot. He was great and was there in about 30minutes.
Next time I would use your car service and not have to
worry about remembering.
Great walking, shopping. Good Grocery store a few
blocks away (inside the Coin shop).

The greeting was warm and informative. The
apartment [Angelina]
is wonderful -- we are extremely happy with it. My
husband was a little aprehensive about renting an
apartment instead of staying in a hotel, but from the
minute he walked in the door, he was completely
convinced that this was the right choice. Jane H,

We just wanted to say thank you for all your help
and quick responses prior to our trip. Everything was
fabulous and we LOVED the Sistina
apartment. It was an absolutely memorable trip,
largely because of that apartment and its terrific
rooftop terrace. We had the same views of Rome as Tom
Cruise's guests at the Hassler! I am recommending
vrbo.com as well as Excellent Europe to everyone. Meredith

Yes, Sei
at Cerratani
was great and yes, you can quote anything I write
here. Location couldn't be better. At one end of the
street is the train station and at the other is the
Duomo.... actually, Duomo is only about 3 blocks. This
is very central. The apartment is light, bright as
well as quiet. The master is off of the livingroom and
the single and double br's are in their own wing
making it "like" a suite with 2 masters --
just what I was originally looking for.
The manager was
exceptional. Weather caused my sister's flight out of
Chicago to be cancelled so she called and informed the
manager of her "next" day plans. And she
even came over to the apartment to inform me of all
this -- beyond the call of duty. The manager also (and
I think this was your idea) had fresh flowers, a
bottle of wine, and chocolates in the apartment for
us.
A few surprises were
that there was no where to wash clothes -- not a
problem -- just a surprise. As you originally stated,
the living room was sparcely furnished with a 2 person
sofa and just the dining table -- again, no problem
for us.
Best? The view of the
Duomo dome. Pat, we will certainly work with you again
and pass your contact info onto others. thank you,

Review of Contessa in Venice.
The accommodations were great. [Villa
Ristoro] The views were great, the pool was
great The kids especially loved the pool. Only
drawbacks were the insects at the pool and the lack of
staples in the house (no soap, dish soap, laundry soap
etc.) The Germans staying in the house next door
were laughably unfriendly and we made a big joke out
of it. The location was fantastic. The little town was
perfect and the little restaurant in the square was
great. We went twice and made many friends. The food
was fabulous and the wine of course was local and very
good. My boys played lots of soccer with the local
kids and my oldest was invited to their weekly match.
The little restaurant at the gas station/bar was ok
but very friendly. We got all our directions and help
from the family who owned it. If you want to watch TV,
get instructions on working it. We couldn't figure it
out but that was fine. You were great.
Jessie, K, July 2006
The owner of the
apartment {Via
Veneto in Rome] was absolutely fantastic, so
helpful and kind it was a pleasure doing business with
him. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the apartment
to anyone nor use it again ourselves should the need
arise. Many thanks also for your thorough follow
through of the booking, very reassuring to arrive
somewhere and it all be as planned – no nasty
surprises!! Accommodations: Fabulous, well set
out apartment. ... it was wonderful to come ‘home’
after a long day of sightseeing and have room to move.
Problems: Only that it can be hard to be super
quiet for the neighbours when traveling with children
especially when one local resident takes her Great
Dane dog in the lift after exercising him (rather
smelly!) Location: Lovely, nice to be that
little bit removed from the tourist area. Not so sure
that the Borghese Gardens lived up to expectations but
it may have been the lack of signage more than the
place Recommendations: Supermarket within
walking distance (it’s on the pedestrian subway to
Spanish Steps) Don’t go in the middle of summer!!
(much too hot) however if you must the apartment has a
fantastic air conditioner. Make sure you buy tickets
online to avoid the queues. Michelle W, July 2006
Your service was wonderful, your numerous
suggestions were invaluable, and our trip was better
than we could have imagined...and our expectations
were high to begin with. Bill C., July 2006
We had a wonderful time in Rome.
The apartment in Rome [Flaminio]
was fantastic! Very roomy and comfortable. Location:
The location was wonderful. Just a short walk to
Piazza del Popolo and even closer to the metro
station. Drawbacks: The laundry [room] being
out on the patio was a bit of a hassle because of
having to keep the screens lowered on that side of the
building during the day Nearby:
There is a fantastic restaurant up in Villa Borghese
called CASINA VALADIER. It was pricey, but had
fantastic food. An easy evening walk from the
apartment. web site www.casinavaladier.it Tips:
Don't get hung up on the owner's seeming obsession
with the electricity usage. He practically petrified
us that we would end up owing some exorbitant amount
for going over the alloted kilowatt hours. In fact, we
did several loads of laundry a day, ran the dishwasher
a few times, and kept the a/c at "American
Cold" and we only had to leave 20 euros. Trish

The apartment
[Tiberio in Rome] has been well represented by you on
your web-site. It is exactly as we expected. The kids
especially liked their own “space” upstairs – we
thought it was rather quaint with such a low ceiling.
At 9 and 10 it’s perfect for them and since I’m
short, I can stand also. My husband and I hardly went
up except to say good night. They were totally
independent up there. The apartment was generally very
quiet except for the night after Italy won the
semi-finals and then I think the upstairs neighbour
was kicking a ball around in the middle of the night!
(Even though we didn’t go out late that night, we
could feel the excitement as groups walked past on
their way to town.) Everything worked well – there
was a power outage one afternoon but it came back on
before dark.
The weather was superb.
Woke up to sunny skies every day. There were a couple
of evenings of rainstorms but that was OK. It was
daylight till 8:30 so we could really enjoy our days.
(Of course the only downside is that to do a nightwalk
through Rome the kids had to stay up very late!)
We did like the
location. It meant for some longer walking at times
but we’re fit types and the kids didn’t complain
too much…It’s good to be a bit away from the main
tourist area. We really liked the Cola d”Rienza St.
The Stranda was great – went there every 2 days or
so. We ended up eating about half of our dinners in
because by the time we got back we were too tired to
head out again, especially to the restaurants that
were recommended (they tend to be in the historical
center). But it was good as 2 nights we bought food
from the “deli” you recommended and had delicious
meals. Also, being so close to the Vatican meant that
we saw the Vatican Museums one afternoon (went in
after 12 as recommended) but were so tired after we
came out after 4pm that we decided to do St. Peter’s
another day.
We found one superb
gelateria place on Cola d’Rienza called “Barila”.
They had lots of flavours, gave generous portions and
you were given a tiny cone on top to scoop ice-cream
with. (It’s on the way to Stranda from the apartment
but on the left hand side of the street). We only
tried one pizzeria in the area but thought it was
overpriced but there was a sudden rainstorm when we
decided to go out for dinner so our choice was
limited. The phone place right next door to the
apartment is good for buying the phone chip.
We paid full price for
admission for our kids to the Colisseum, Castel d’Angelo
etc. as they are “non-EU” kids – I even asked
and confirm before buying tickets. Then when we were
in Pompeii at the end of our trip, we found out NZ had
an agreement and that kids are supposed to go in for
free! I’m not sure about Canadian or Australian but
pays to check – mention your nationality, not sure
“Non-EU” kids as I said! We used the audio guides
in Vatican Museum, Castel and Pompeii and thought they
were really good and we can wander at our own pace We
used a guide for Ancient Rome at the beginning of the
trip and in hindsight, it was a good decision as there’s
no audio guide (I don’t think anyways). While the
guide was good, he talked very fast and not being
history buffs, we missed half of what he said but
still learnt a lot from the other half!
Overall, your service
was excellent. The only aggravation was the problem
regarding the check-in a few days before we’re due
to leave. [We had trouble providing an early check-in,
but it all worked out in the end. pb] The ideal of
course is for the customer to pay for the night
before. However, for people like us who think it’s a
bit much to pay for another night – (assuming the
apartment has not been rented out otherwise), perhaps
either just offer a “drop-off luggage” service or
an earlier check-in for a pro-rata % of the nightly
cost. I think if that was offered, then it would make
for less hassles. We had an earlier check-in and we
paid a pro-rata cost which overall seems fair. Mabel
Lam, Hong Kong, July 2006
We
really enjoyed our apartments. It was great to
be slightly off the beaten path and both apartments
were cool and comfortable and convenient. Having
a washer was really key...and bringing
"travel" clothing that dried overnight on a
clothesline was very important. I think my
husband preferred the Rome
location to the Florence
one, and my son preferred the Florence apartment
to the Rome one, so we are split! We found it to
be very nice to be these buildings because they were
so quiet...even after Italy won the World Cup!
We slept very soundly every night and had nice air
conditioned naps and ice in our drinks from the
freezers on the hot afternoons.
We
liked feeling a little like locals....shopping in the
small and large grocery stores, gelato and pastry
shops and local businesses. We could practice
speaking a little Italian and hear it all around.
This was instantly preferable to the 5-star, Beverly
Hills-like accommodations where everyone...staff and
guests, speak English. Our apartments felt like
sanctuaries...peaceful and welcoming quiet and cool
from the heat and crowds of the city.
I
can only think minor issues in the Florence apartment,
but I guess details are important: The photo of
the living room and the description shows two couches.
There is only one now. The one by the kitchen is
gone and there are two chairs and a small table there
now. There is no microwave in the kitchen.
I could not figure out how to turn on the stove...I
saw the gas, but there was no flame and no matches, so
we didn't cook and the A/C doesn't really get to the
kitchen, anyways, so it was great for clothes drying.
The master bath had a rather strong sewer odor
periodically coming from the shower drain?
[Sorry to say that this is very common with older
Italian plumbing, the system doesn't contain a loop to
trap the gasses, probably reduces clogging problems,
but also smells waft up sometimes, too. The solution
is to a) run some water down the drain and b) close
the door. pb] The television does not get any English
speaking channels [Will check into this; it is
supposed to have Satellite reception. pb]. The
landlady was on time and nice...and she was instantly
available by phone when we blew a fuse...however, we
were not shown the location of the electrical box
(outside the front door of our unit) until we blew the
fuse, so we did not get to take a photo of the
kilowatt reading at the start of our stay. The
charge at the end was about 20-25 Euro. Finally,
the elevators were tiny, but I have experienced that
in Brazil, too, so I am glad that we each only had one
duffel bag on wheels.
We
felt that the locations were great, but then we were
willing to walk a lot. It took us a day or two
to discover the Spagna passageway under the Borghese
Gardens, but it was all quiet and cool and went right
by a large grocery store, which was great. Rome
was perfect for going to the Gardens and I loved the
museum! We walked underground to the Spanish
Steps almost every day, and even walked home from the
Pantheon and Piazza Navona. We felt safe in both
Rome and Florence...no gypsies, no pickpockets and, as
I mentioned before, even with the celebrating of the
semi-finals and Finals of World Cup, we never felt any
threat. only their joy over a national pride.
We
used the Rick Steve's guide to Italy and found that
every one of his recommendations was right on. I
do think that when he says make a reservation, you
should make one--in person if possible. I also
read your suggestions and found them to be right on.
Absolutely
limit yourself to one light bag that you can carry up
3 flights of stairs. Take travel clothing
(especially
travel underwear) by Ex Officio, Tilley or
Columbia, because anything made of cotton takes two
days to dry and weighs too much. Take
clothes pins and laundry packets and a clothesline....the
daily laundry only took a half hour of my time...right
after my nightly shower, and we felt fresh and clean
every day, even though it was humid and in the
high 80's. Remarkably, one of the best things I
brought (and I never use one in Southern California) was
a small, purse-sized umbrella. We had
torrential thunderstorms on one day, but more likely,
I used it to keep my family and me from
melting in the Piazza San Pietro, as we toured Vatican
City and stood in line for Mass at St. Peter's.
Anytime we stood in line in the sun, I shamelessly
popped up the umbrella and felt immediate relief.
We also filled up our water bottles at all the
fountains in Rome and never had one moment of
intestinal upset. Another new thing was the Roma
Pass, it is 18 Euro per person and it gets you
free public transportation for three days, plus 2 free
museum entrances (such as Galleria Borghese and the
Colesseum, although sometimes there are fees for the
"special extra exhibit" like the one we saw
on Raphael at Galleria Borghese). Any other
museum in the group is discounted. We found it
to be a great tourist find...you get them at the
Termini train station in Rome, near the post office.
More info on them is on the internet. We used Angel
Tours for our tour of the Vatican, and I can
heartily recommend them for someone who wants an
inexpensive tour of the Vatican or other Rome sites,
by a pleasant group of Irish students. Our car
rental was a breeze through AutoEurope.
Get a good road map of Tuscany and you won't get
lost...we never even had to make a U-turn when we
drove from Florence to Siena and San Gimingnano.
You
were perfect and better than any travel agent I have
used. It was really great to be able to
communicate via email...so much better than the
telephone tag that I used to play with my travel
agents. Jane M, California, June 2006
Rome, both accomodations were great, location,
location. The 4 teenagers were in heaven. We felt
comforatble letting them tour around on their own
(with some limits). Other friends stayed in
Trastervere and it was not friendly. Stefano the
driver was good. The AC in Bella
was not as good as it could have been. The information
you provided about the neighbourhood was great. There
was a taxi strike in Rome and a bus strike in Venice,
but hey, go with the flow... The manager was a little
condescending but full info info. We took her advice
to visit the Vatican museums at lunch time (a very
long but quick line) but when we left at 2:30 there
was no line at all.
I would highly recommend the Frattina. The location
was superb. Easy to get to and from. Grocery and
restaurants nearby. Excellent for teenagers. Judy

We returned from Italy late
Saturday night. I must tell you -- Borgo
Bucine was spectacular. Your directions were
terrific and the family was lovely. I got especially
friendly with Antonella. My daughter fell in love with
their dogs.
So, thanks for hand picking a lovely villa for us. We
had a wonderful and relaxing trip. Tuscany is a very
special place. The Italian people--even more special.
It can get unbearably hot in the summer. We may
have hit an unusually hot spell, but it did put a
damper on our enjoyment. We had several days of 95-100
degree weather. Brutal. If people have a choice, they
should choose May or October.
There were soooooo many tourists, it was crazy.
When I travel, I like to spend time with the people
who live in the area. Not people like me! Anyway,
Antonella suggested three "tourist free"
places for us that I loved.
Thanks for great tips. Oh, we ate in a place that
you recommended. I don't have the name right now but
it was about a block away from the Piazza della
Signoria. Wonderful food. NO TOURISTS!! Grazie, Andrea
Y, New York, June 2006
We
have just returned from our trip.
I want to thank you for the help with the
lodging in
Tuscany
(Villa
Colle). We
were very pleased with the property overall, the
ladies were wonderful to us and my boys had a great
time playing on the grounds.
The location really is ideal for exploring all
parts of the area. Thanks
again. Tom Z. Arizona, June 2006
We had a terrific time
staying in your apartment (Flaminio,
Rome)... everything was great and Rene could not
have been nicer. He gave us a little primer on where
we were, and what was close by (banca, tobacco stand,
market, etc.) We had plenty of room for five. We drew
straws on who got the master ,and I lost! We
especially enjoyed opening the windows at night for
the cool breezes. The girls in the master complained
about a loud bird that woke them up WAY too early.
HOWEVER, in a day he migrated to the front of the
building. We really enjoyed the terrace after a day
out sightseeing...wine and appetizers (love those
marinated olives from the market around the corner,
and also found that great Moretti beer there, try the
soft cheese on the brushetta also). We were able to
walk to all the restaurants, and that was a big
money-saver! I do recommend going to the Borghese
-they were having a special exhibit of Raphael there
at the time...you have to make reservations online for
a two hour time -slot or you will not get in. They
were turning people away left and right. I really
appreciate all that you did to make things run smooth.
Oh-I do recommend Roberto and Marzia (www.DriverInItaly.com)
for our transfer. We were in a brand new Volkswagon
van that had plenty of room for us and luggage. The
driver stopped when we said stop. He was very
agreeable to anything. We stopped in Orvieto (a lovely
little village with a beautiful Duomo and wonderful
ceramics) and then on to Civita Bagnoreggio (you must
see this place to believe it) We took several side
trips by train during our 10 days there. We went to
Riomaggiore in the Cinque Terre region. We had a
wonderful seafood meal there-fried anchovy, octopus,
squid, calamari, etc Wonderful!! Then, later in the week
we travelled by train to Cortona-that is a magical
place. We WILL go back there. All in all-the whole
trip could not have been better. I hope this tells you
what you need and hopefully will help someone else
along the way. Again, thanks for a wonderful vacation.

Overall, how did you find your accommodations (Spagna,
Rome)? Fine. No problems. What did you
enjoy the most? Location unbeatable. Quiet. Any
drawbacks or problems? No. What did you think
about the location and the surrounding area?
Perfect. What can Excellent Europe do to improve
its service? Nothing Dr. Ray B, Illinois, June
2006
Overall accommodations
were excellent. Florence
and Sorrento were especially exceptional. The apt. in
Rome (Greci - not on EE site at this time), while
nice, was across the street from the music school and
for those who want to sleep in, this cannot happen in
this apt. All of my expectations for Italy were
totally met. I don't have a favorite, nor do I have
any regrets ( maybe the driver from Sorrento to Rome
could have been a little friendlier and driven slower
- he drove most the way @ 175 KM per hour and we were
a little uncomfortable with that speed.
Locations were terrrific. If I were to plan this trip
again, I would not have spent so much time in Rome. We
saw it all in the first three days. Our guide in Rome
was great. I like spending more time on the waterfront
cities Cinque Terra was great. We did a private tour
down to Siena and wine tasting along the way. I would highly
recommend anyone going to Florence to make this trip.
We didn't eat at any bad restaurants and as you know
the shops in Rome are plentiful, but a little pricy.
Tips for future guests - take very comfortable walking
shoes! Excellent Europe met all
of our expectations and you did a great job - and I
have passed your name and contact information to a
number of my friends who will be calling
you. Thank you. Bob D,
Washington, June 2006
We had a great week in Rome and enjoyed our stay at
the Flaminio
apartment. The accommodations were excellent. With the
exception of low water pressure [a common issue
throughout Rome, pb], everything was fine. The water
pressure is beyond your control, so we don’t allow
it to reflect on the apartment. We could have easily
stayed there for a month, it was so comfortable.
The location was very good. We always felt safe and
it was quiet since we weren’t on a busy street —
this is very important to us since my wife and oldest
daughter are light sleepers. It was great to be near
Villa Borghese, the Flaminio Gate, and Piazza del
Popolo. We walked everywhere to get to know the city
with the exception of a couple of evenings when we
took taxis home. We used the Metro only once to visit
the Via Appia Antica and the catacombs.
Two of the most fun
and memorable events were our private guide that
toured us through the Roman Forum and the Coliseum,
and the Angles and Demons tour. We ate at
several restaurants near Piazza del Popolo, but the
absolute BEST restaurant was Taverna Angelica between
Piazza de Pietro and Castel San Angelo [Piazza A.
Capponi 6, Phone: 06-6874514]. They offered the most
creative menu and wines that aren’t exported plus a
rich and thoughtful décor. I felt like we found a
place where California crossed with Rome. Oh, and the
service was “prompt.”
We would recommend going to Saint Peter’s early
(8:30 am) and the Vatican museum after lunch once the
lines are gone. Biking on Via Appia Antica on Sunday’s
or holidays when no cars are allowed is a perfect way
to get out into the country without jumping on a
train. We would recommend walking down the Spanish
steps late at night (e.g., Midnight) when it is quiet
and you can absorb the romance of the setting. Trevi
fountain is also best enjoyed at night and avoided
during the day. We enjoyed an afternoon picnic in the
park to the right of the Campidoglio where the Capitoline
Museum is. It is a peaceful place to relax with food
and wine while having a nice view overlooking the
cross section of modern and old Rome.
For anyone visiting Rome with children, we would
recommend the book “Around
Rome with Kids” by Fodor’s. We used it as a
resource to build out itinerary and complimented the
information it offers with the detailed descriptions,
guides and maps of the adult-version from Fodor’s.
We found the services from Excellent Europe to be
the most complete. We have rented apartments in London
and Paris, and Excellent Europe was orders of
magnitude more comprehensive. The guide book that you
sent on what to expect when renting an apartment and
what to expect in Rome — everything from buying
groceries to restaurants — were both helpful and
humorous. We have already told many of our friends
about your service. We enjoyed being a customer and
hope to return to Italy and stay in one of your
rentals again. All the best, Mike and Beth, May 2006
Thanks for your outstanding guide book and
information for our trip. You have provided an
outstanding service to your customers by offering this
complete information. Jamie S, April 2006
Grazie - My trip was wonderfully relaxing –
people remarked that I looked “youthful” if that’s
what a trip to Italy does for one, then we should all
do them as frequently as possible. Pat, thanks
again for your help and patience in getting me
situated in Firenze.

I booked the
apartment with Excellent Europe. The wonderful Pat
Byrne helped me choose from among their many Florence
apartments, and she was knowledgable, kind and really
made me feel secure in my choice. The rental process
was a breeze and Pat was incredibly gracious. I will
trust her judgement from now on! I would recommend
this rental to my friends and family without the
slightest hesitation. The entire experience exceeded
my expectations. That apartment is woven into my
heart; it will always seem like "home" in
Florence. Stella, New York, November 2005
We had a great time in Rome. The apartment [Frattina
Gina] is well-situated, very comfortable, and
attractive. The set-up works well for two couples. It
would be nice if there were cable television access,
esp. CNN or an equivalent, [coming in 2006] and if a
few CDs or DVDs were kept at the apartment. Beds were
very comfortable. Otherwise, no real drawbacks. The
area is very convenient, with most sites and
attractions within walking distance. The nearby
Palladium Enoteca, which is around the corner from the
apartment has very good, well-priced wine selections,
and we were fortunate because each night there was a
wine-tasting with hors d'ouerves - a different Italian
vineyard each evening!! The owners/proprietors are
very pleasant and helpful. Otherwise, we just enjoyed
exploring and trying different restaurants - some of
which worked and some of which did not.
Excellent Europe did a great job with its
information and arrangements. William S, November

just wanted to thank you for everything! The apartment
is fabulous and it is so wonderful to be in Rome. The
weather is just perfect. Anyhow, thank you again
and I would highly recommend your company to anyone! Kate

Hi,
Pat, we had such great time on our trip. Athens was
fabulous, our cruise was wonderful - ah! those Isles!
- and the apartment [Frattina
Gina] was a perfect finish. The location
could not have better and the weather was mild enough
so we could spend time on the terraces. So we
thank you for all you did to make it a great trip. One
observation - Ron and I were in Rome about the same
time about 6 years ago and didn't remember any crowds.
This time,. We could not believe the number of people
in Rome. It was a four day weekend, so the streets
were filled. It got a little quieter on Tuesday night
and for the rest of the week, but what an assault on
that city when all of us tourists visit! - Lots of
Germans, Italians, Canadians. We happened into St.
Peter's just before an audience with the Pope. SO we
got fabulous seats and saw the Pope and received his
blessing. It was quite a spectacle. We also used your
list for Pizza Se, the Pastry shop, the groceries, and
a couple of restaurants. I also navigated the Italian
coffee pot successfully and will not be cowed by it
ever again! Thanks again, best to you, Jan I,
October 2005
Tuscany was absolutely enchanting.
It was much prettier and relaxingly pleasant than I
ever expected. I have wonderful mind pictures of the
rolling hills and patchwork of grapes and olive trees
from the winding roads. It really was special. Accommodations
were fine. Only downer was the lack of food right
there. Location was fine when we finally found it. Villa
Sofia is a charming place.
The people at the art gallery up by
the sculpture park told us about a restaurant in the
hamlet of San Sano that was absolutely wonderful. I
highly recommend it. I don't have the map, but it
was close to the intersection of 408 and the road the
went by Villa Sofia and the sculpture park.
I am so impressed by the materials
you included with the confirmation. Better than any
guidebook to relax and be comfortable in new
surroundings. Such a thoughtful thing to do Needless
to say, we are more than happy with your services.
Thank you for being so helpful and patient with a
group going every which way! I have all your materials
filed to take to our winter home in Arizona next week;
I am sure I will have an opportunity to share them
with our traveling
Prior to the trip I rented a PBS

The service that Pat is offering is
like having our own personal travel assistant…
I am not sure if you really realise
just how helpful you have been, we have been renting
apartments across Europe for a long time and there is
always this degree if anxiety as we get close to the
apartment because what we have ended up in has varied
so much over the years from windows with Iron bars, to
empty pools, to beautiful homes.
Rome - nothing to do with you. We
book the Crowne Plaza, St. Peters. Excellent hotel.
Room rate euro95 per night for us all, but after that
everything was expensive. Breakfast cost us 54euro per
day. The hotel itself though was great, curtesy bus
service to/from the city and airport but even if you
didn't use it taxis in and out of the city were really
reasonable for the four of us and there was a local
bus service. Rome was hot.
Tuscany - Driving instructions were
excellent. The apartment [Villa
Agosto] was probably the best we have ever stayed
in. Well equipped. People very nice, pool great,
location absolutely excellent.
Overall we had a lovely holiday and
all your info was most helpful. The Kids
Europe guides were used, probably not as much as I
thought, but certainly entertained the drives to/from
Tuscany and helped us choose places to see in Rome. Jean

Dear Pat: We had a fabulous trip,
and the highlight was Rome. Our apartment [Frattina
Gina] was wonderful – perfect for a family. We
had spent the previous week in a B&B in Denmark
which was gorgeous but didn’t offer the same degree
of flexibility or privacy.
It felt more authentic to stay in an
apartment in Rome rather than a hotel. We particularly
loved the large balcony where our favourite pastime of
a night was to share a bottle of red wine while
sampling meats, cheeses, breads, etc we’d picked up
from a gorgeous deli near the Trevi Fountain. It was
very hot while we were there so we did the touristy
things in the morning, generally had lunch al fresco
(pizza was a favourite with the kids), had an
afternoon siesta, then enjoyed our balcony while
experiencing Rome’s wild electrical storms. We loved
listening to the Italian singing coming from below in
the restaurants and generally hearing the buzz of the
city.
The apartment was perfectly located,
couldn’t get better. If we were at all lost we would
follow the smell of the soap shop opposite. Everything
was immaculate and it was great to have a washing
machine and dryer while holidaying with kids.
I was surprised that the kids
enjoyed Rome as much as they did. They loved the
Italian people, full of fun and life. They loved
walking in the middle of the roads and weaving their
way in and out of the cars. We walked everywhere which
was certainly the best way to get around.
As far as the tourist attractions
go, my advice would be to get to the Sistine Chapel
about 20 mins before it opens to avoid the queues. The
other thing I was told by friends which worked well is
to pay for the audio guide at the Colosseum. This way
you can go through the queue for groups which puts you
straight at the front of the line. Without this you
would be queueing for a couple of hours.
My main tip would be that while you
have to put time aside to see things like the
Colosseum, Vatican, Trevi Fountain, etc, allow plenty
of time just to exist, people watch and experience the
daily life.
My one regret is that we spent a
week in London/England following Rome. In retrospect I
would have spent longer in Italy, perhaps spending the
extra time in Florence and Tuscany. I thought the kids
would have been bored but I know now they would have
loved it. They enjoyed Rome as much as Disneyland
which we went to later in the holiday!
The kids threw so many coins in the
Trevi Fountain to make sure they’d be back – my
husband said if they threw any more they’d end up
marrying the Pope!
I can’t think of anything that
Excellent Europe can do to improve its service – it
was second to none. I was a little wary as I had
researched and booked a large portion of our
accommodation/car hire/transfers etc over the internet
and I kept waiting for something to go wrong but it
never did! I would certainly recommend Excellent
Europe to anyone intending to travel to Italy. It
would be fabulous to have the same accommodation
options/advice, etc, for each country within Europe as
it is a difficult place to travel to with kids. I wish
I had known about your sister’s
business earlier on as we were looking at going to
Paris as well but couldn’t find any suitable
accommodation for three children.
Thank you for your attention to
detail which made our stay so enjoyable. We will
certainly be contacting you if we can arrange a future
holiday to Italy.
Kind regards, Jenni W,

We want you to know that we found
your service invaluable and have been telling many
others. Even the print outs you sent before leaving
were so helpful before and during the trip. Many
friends have queried us as to where we stayed and how
we got our information. Hopefully many referrals will
come your way. We had 3 days in Venice, 6 days in
Tuscany and 4 days in Rome. It was superb. great
advice to limit our lodgings to 3 places. We drove
around Tuscany, to the sea, san Gimignano and Volterra.
we could have done more but Colle di Val D'elsa and Villa
Colle was too wonderful to leave. Very relaxing
there!!
Driving was absolutely fine. I'm
glad i did all my worrying at home 'cause we had no
trouble at all. Even drove back from the Sea on the
autostrada to reduce the time and it certainly wasn't
much different than driving in a busy city in Ontario.
Keith navigated while I drove. It would have been
tougher doing both especially getting out of Florence.
